Basics Of the Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology

NFC is a short-range wireless communication, which is intended to be used for making payments, tranferring data, etc.

What is NFC?

A combinition of existing seamless identification and interconnection technologies evolved, and resulted in a new short-range wireless connectivity technology. It is called Near Field Communication (NFC), which often comes integrated with products, which simplify the way devices interact among each other. The near field communication technology allows faster connections and enable people to securely send and receive information . NFC can be used with many different devices such as cell phones for making payments, transferring data and with digital cameras that send thier photos to a TV, and all that can done with ease.

Working of NFC

NFC operates at 13.56 Mhz and able to transfer data up to 424 Kbits/second. NFC allows you to both – read and write information on a NFC-compatible devices. Communication between two NFC-enabled devices occurs when they are brought within four centimeters of one another. A connection between devices is established with a simple touch of signals , which is then compativle with other wireless technologies i.e. Bluetooth and Wifi. Because the transmission distance between the devicec is very short, the NFC-enabled devices are inherently secure.

Uses of NFC

The technology is envisioned it will be used in smartcards to be added to variety of things such as cell phones, digital camera, game console, etc, which will make these devices ready to be used for e-commerce, online financial transactions.

Other examples of what a NFC user can do include:

  • Download video or music from a smart poster.
  • Pay train or bus fare.
  • Pair multiple Bluetooth devices.
  • Pay for a purchase at a Point of Sale (POS) terminal.
  • Print a photo on a printer.

The Near field communication technology is expected to provide yet another way to put new products and services in front of consumers.
